Nizhny Tagil is a city in Russia, located in the Sverdlovsk Oblast in the Ural Mountains. Its 2002 census population was 390,498. It's situated in 20-25 kilomeres from virtual border between Europe and Asia. The city was founded in 1722 as a Demidov iron-founding plant, and developed as one of the early centers of Russian industrialization. It has been a major producer of cast iron and steel. The first Russian steam locomotive was constructed there in 1833.Nizhny Tagil is a sister city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
