Mahachkala is the capital of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. The Republic of Dagestan is the largest Russian region in the Northern Caucasus. The population of the republic is 2.1 million and the area is 50.3 thousand sq. km. Dagestan stretches about 400 km north to south, and about 200 km east to west. It has the longest Caspian Sea shoreline in Russia (about 530 km). The republic borders Azerbaijan, Georgia, Stavropol region, Kalmykia and Chechnya. There are 10 cities in the republic, with Makhachkala and Derbent being the largest.
