Kislovodsk is a city of about 115,000 in southern Russia on the northern edge of the Caucasus Mountains, between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. The city is a health resort famous for its mineral water (for drinking and bathing) and clean mountain air. Summer weather is similar to Colorado Springs.In 1987, during Mikhail Gorbachev's third year as leader of the Soviet Union, the State of Iowa pioneered the first US-Soviet sister-state partnership by entering into agreements with Gorbachev's home region, Stavropolski krai. The first Stavropol official to visit Iowa came to Muscatine, and Muscatine and Kislovodsk became the first Iowa-Russia sister cities, through an agreement signed by mayors Viktor Beketov and Don LaMar on March 4, 1989.
