Gelendzhik with a population of 52 thousand, one of the oldest cities on the Russian coast of the Black sea, was founded in 1831 as a fortress. Gelendzhik was raised into the status of a city in 1915. The present city is the resort centre of the Krasnodar region. The Pitsunda pine forest (the memorial of nature), the gardens and the vineyards surround the city. The resort is recommended for the treatment and prophylaxis of the respiratory, circulation`s of the blood organs and the nervous system. There are the theatre, the Museum of Local Lore, the Museum of V.G.Korolenko in Gelendzhik.
