Cheboksary (alternatively Shupashkar in Chuvash), is the capital of Chuvashia Republic. The Republic of Chuvashia is located in the central part of European Russia. The republic is one of the most densely populated regions in the Russian Federation. Its population is about 1.4 million people and the area is 6,950 square miles. Cheboksary is the administrative, economic and cultural center of the republic located in the northern part of the region. The city stands on the right bank of the Volga River. The population is about 600,000 people. The city is located 400 miles from Moscow, 150 miles from Nizhny Novgorod and 275 miles from Samara. Cheboksary has a satellite town called Novocheboksarsk about four miles east with population 125,600 people.
