Vologda Region, one of the regions of the Russian Federation, is situated in the southwest of the East European plain. It borders many Russian regions, including the Republic of Karelia and the Arkhangelsk, Kostroma, Yaroslavl, Tver, Novgorod and Leningrad regions. The area of Vologda region is 145 thousand sq. km, which is equal to the territories of Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Switzerland put together. The population is about 2,000,000 people. The region has several major industrial centers including Vologda, Cherepovets and Sokol. Vologda with a population of 1,300,000 is the administrative center of the region and favourite city for tourists. It stands on the Vologda River, a tributary of the Sukhona River. The city is one of the pearls of the Golden Ring of Russia and an important rail junction with connections to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk and Kirov.
