Smolensk is an administrative center of Smolensk region. The region, which has a territory of 49,798 sq. km. and population of 1,034,000 people, is situated on the west of East European plain. It stretches 280 km west to east and 250 km north to south. Smolensk stands on both banks of the Dnieper River, 260 miles (418 km) west of Moscow. It is a very old Russian town and an important regional cultural and trade center. The territory of Smolensk is 166.35 square km. Its population is about 351,100 people.
