Severobaikalsk is the biggest city on the northern banks of Lake Baikal. The town appeared almost overnight in the 1970s alongside the BAM Railway. Before that, there was just taiga here, reaching to the edge of the lake. The city is an excellent base for walking in the Baikal Mountains or sailing on the lake. The boat trip from Irkutsk to Severobaikalsk takes 12 hours.
