The port of Petrozavodsk, also called Petroskoi in Karelian and Finnish, stands on the banks of Onezhskoye Ozero (Lake Onega). Today it is capital of the Autonomous Republic of Karelia, which is one of the regions of Russian Federation. The area of the republic is 172,000 sq. km. The population is about 794,000 people. Petrozavodsk was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and has had town status since 1777.
Petrozavodsk is industrial, cultural and science center of the republic. The population of the town is 266,000 people.
